After having undergone surgery, the first thing the doctors will ask you to do is to gradually start moving and resume your activities to normal, although it may seem difficult at first, it is important that you do it, even if they are gentle movements such as walking or getting out of bed since this will speed up your recovery. This physical activity will help your digestive and circulatory systems, thus avoiding the formation of blood clots.

Here are some tips that will help your recovery to be optimal.

Do breathing exercises

According to the popular physiatrist Julie Silver, who developed the STAR prehab program, inhaling for 3 seconds and holding your breath for another 3 seconds and exhaling again for 3 seconds about 5 times at various times throughout the day, helps strengthen the respiratory muscles after surgery, decreasing any risk of pneumonia or related illnesses.

Healthy diet

A balanced diet, rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals will help your healing process go much faster, as well as fight infections. Remember to talk to your nutritionist or dietician so you can support your nutrition, which with the unique combination of nutrients and vitamins will help your body recover faster. This is key before and after surgery.

Lower your stress levels

If you can manage your stress, you may be able to control or moderate any pain that may occur, as well as help your body rest and sleep better, and boost your mood.

Avoid smoking

Smoking only delays the healing process in your body, so if you are a smoker it is important that you stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery, this will help avoid any risk of infection during the surgical process.

Exercise

Exercise helps to improve your circulation and strengthen your lungs, which is beneficial for wound healing. Remember to always check with your doctor which exercises are ideal for you.
